WHAT SHOULD I BE AWARE OF WHEN USING MY AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVER?
Follow the checklist below to ensure your avalanche transceiver works reliably:
- How much longer will my avalanche transceiver battery last?
If your battery status is 60% or lower, you should change the batteries. Your avalanche transceiver needs far more power when using the search function.
- Which batteries should I use in my avalanche transceiver?
You should never use rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries can drain completely in the cold.
- Did I remove the batteries at the end of the season?
You should take the batteries out of your avalanche transceiver in summer. The batteries could, e.g. leak and damage your device.
- Is my avalanche transceiver transmitting a signal?
A group check should be part of your routine before every tour/trip into the mountains. Check each other’s avalanche transceivers for signal transmission.
- Should I carry my avalanche transceiver close to my body?
You should always wear your avalanche transceiver close to your body, never over your jacket or in your backpack. This way, it can never be torn from your body in an avalanche.
- Is my cell phone far enough away from my avalanche transceiver?
Smartphones and other electronic devices can disrupt the signal of your avalanche transceiver. It is important to keep your cell phone at least 40cm away or put it in flight mode (which also saves battery).
- Is my avalanche transceiver up to date?
You can update the ORTOVOX avalanche transceivers with the latest software. We recommend checking for new updates at the beginning of the season.
WHY IS AN AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVER SO IMPORTANT?
A burial victim’s chance of survival drops drastically after 15 minutes. In the event of an avalanche, time is critical to survival. Only with an avalanche transceiver do you have a chance of locating a burial victim in time, or of being found yourself.
You should also ensure you know how to handle your avalanche transceiver. Practicing with the device is part of the ORTOVOX SAFETY ACADEMY program. With its avalanche courses, the SAFETY ACADEMY is the world’s largest avalanche prevention training initiative. Get trained and reduce the risk!
